Over time, we’ve increased the sugar in shortcake, so this is truly old fashioned.
From a box sold in Canby, Oregon.
Old Fashioned Shortcake
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 Tbsp. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. milk
Sift flour, salt, sugar, baking powder and cream of tartar. Cut in shortening. Add milk.
Pat on 8″ round cake pans. 450 degrees.
Split batter. Fill with sugared berries. Top with cream.
