Holiday Layer Cake

With raisins, cinnamon, and ground clove.

From the box of A.D. from Lutz, Florida, by way of Pennsylvania in the 1940s, and originating in Ohio in the 1920s.

Holiday Layer Cake

Cream 1 cup of butter and two cups sugar.
Add beaten yolks of 4 eggs.
2 Tbsp. chocolate melted over fire.
1/2 tsp. each of cinnamon and cloves.
1 tsp. of vanilla.
1-1/3 cups of water.
4 cups of flour.
1 tsp. soda.
1 cup each of shredded candied citron-peel and seedless raisins.

Beat well and bake in layers. 20 minutes.

Filling and frosting:
Cream 2/3 cups butter with 3 cups of powdered sugar, add 1 tsp. orange juice or extract and stiffly beaten egg whites. Spread.
