Texas Trash

I thought for sure this recipe would include jean cut-offs.

Actually, I know it’s not even much of a recipe; I had just never heard that Chex Mix is called Texas Trash in some parts of the country. Apparently Texans take some kind of pride in this? I don’t generally think being associated with trash is a plus, so I’d assume it started in Oklahoma? I’m not sure.

Anyhow, a slightly more complete recipe follows.

From a box sold in San Antonio, Texas.

Texas Trash (I guess)

2 cups Corn Chex
2 cups Wheat Chex
2 cups Rice Chex
1 cup  mixed nuts
1 cup pretzel sticks
1 stick of butter (or, to be true to the original, 1/2 stick butter and 1/2 stick more butter)
1 tablespoon Worcestershire
1 tablespoon Tabasco sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon seasoned salt

  1. Preheat oven to 250F.
  2. Melt butter. Mix butter, Worcestershire, Tabasco, garlic powder, onion powder, and seasoned salt together.
  3. Mix all Chex, nuts, and pretzels into a bowl.
  4. Pour butter mixture over cereal mixture, stirring to evenly coat cereal mixture.
  5. Bake for 1 to 1.5 hours, stirring every 15 minutes, or until dry.
